Liposuction

Liposuction is an effective way to shape your body in a manner that best suits you. Sometimes parts of your body don’t respond to changes in weight as you might expect, removing excess fat in some spots while leaving it hanging in some others. Luckily, the latter can be removed as well through surgery.

Everyone’s body changes over time, things like weight loss or gain, aging, pregnancy or lifestyle can all determine your shape. Liposuction can help you take further control of it. Find out how.

Fat happens

Fat is a natural part of the human body and while we may have some control over how much of it there is, try as we might, we can’t just take it and put it into parts where it might look more flattering. You may have seen the commercial where a woman just has enough looking at her asymmetric self in the mirror and pushes the rolls of fat on her belly into her breasts, but reality is not as simple as that. Almost.

While some fat is essential to a healthy body, it can be safely removed from certain parts in order to achieve a better shape. The body will make up for the loss but not as much in the spot where liposuction was worked. This also means that the operation is not meant to be a means of losing weight.

What it is…

  • A surgical body contouring procedure
  • Purely cosmetic, allowing you to find your desired shape
  • Low risk
  • Best when you have reached your target weight

What it isn’t…

  • A weight loss procedure
  • A method of sculpting skin
  • Complete fat removal
  • Without some recovery time

Correct stubborn parts of your body with liposuction

You might expect your body to evenly (and perhaps even symmetrically) change shape after gaining or losing weight and some people truly are that lucky. What a lot of us have to deal with are curves that are in the wrong places, rolls of fat in unflattering spots even after getting to a healthy weight.

Liposuction helps correct the shape of your body parts that may not respond to exercise or change of weight, such as on your abdomen, thighs or hips.

Take control of your shape after bariatric surgery

Since bariatric procedures tend to bring forth a rapid weight loss, oftentimes the body shape does not respond to it as you might desire. With procedures like the gastric bypass or plication, losing weight might be so fast that only certain body parts show a significant change, while the rest only mildly follows suit. Pockets of fat may remain in places that causes sagging and unflattering shapes.

Liposuction can help you make sure that your bariatric procedure not only allows you to become healthier but also to gain your desired body shape. Best results may be gained when undergoing the procedure approximately a year after your operation, when you have settled into your healthy weight.

Which regions can be worked?

Liposuction removes excess fat from certain regions of your body. Most often these are:

  • Abdomen
  • Arms
  • Buttocks
  • Chin and cheeks
  • Hips
  • Thighs
  • Waist

The choice is yours, but the specifics can be decided with the help of your surgeon prior to the operation.

What is recovery like?

  • Operation time: 1 to 3 hours
  • Hospital stay: 1 to 2 days
  • Recovery time: 2 to 6 weeks
  • Work leave required: at least 1 week

The time needed to recover mostly depends on how extensive the liposuction procedure is going to be. This means how many regions of your body will have its fat removed, which is generally from 2 up to 8. It all depends on how many parts of the body you wish to contour, which can also be determined with the help of your surgeon.

Two to four regions generally mean faster recovery, but it all depends on your physiology. Regardless of the amount of regions worked, you will need to wear special elastic compression garments for up to 6 weeks after the surgery, which maximises the effects of the procedure and keeps any complications from emerging.

Results

The outcome of any liposuction procedure is not immediate and can generally take up to a year to fully realise. While the removal of fat in the areas of your choice will be permanent if you keep to the same lifestyle, later moderate changes in shape may occur due to aging or health.

Follow-up procedures may be necessary in case of any complications or if prior liposuction does not have the desired effect. Risks and outcomes can be extensively discussed with the surgeon before the operation so you can make a conscious decision. You will find, however, that liposuction has helped a lot of people achieve a suitable body shape and that it can be the same for you.
